English Definition
The proportional share that each party to a maritime venture must pay towards a general average loss, calculated based on the saved value of their respective interests in the vessel, cargo, and freight. The contribution is determined by an average adjuster who assesses the total sacrifice and distributes the cost among all benefiting parties. Cargo owners must provide general average bonds or guarantees before their goods are released by the shipowner following a general average declaration.
