English Definition
A maritime loss that arises from a deliberate and reasonable sacrifice of property or extraordinary expenditure incurred for the common safety of a vessel, its cargo, and freight during a voyage. General average losses are distinguished from particular average losses, which affect only a single party's interest. The total general average loss is apportioned among all parties with a financial stake in the venture through the general average adjustment process governed by the York-Antwerp Rules.
