English Definition
Indirect costs that cannot be directly attributed to a specific product, project, or cost centre but are necessary for the overall functioning of the organisation, including rent, utilities, depreciation of office equipment, corporate insurance, and administrative staff salaries. General overheads are allocated to projects or business units through predetermined allocation bases such as direct labour hours, revenue, or floor space. In construction and project finance, the treatment and recoverability of general overheads is a significant contractual and accounting issue.
