English Definition
The national currency of Georgia, introduced in 1995 to replace the transitional coupon and issued under the authority of the country's central bank. As a relatively thinly traded currency, it carries the convertibility and transfer considerations typical of small open economies, where the depth of the local hedging market rarely matches the tenor of infrastructure debt. A project earning lari revenue while servicing hard-currency debt therefore confronts a structural mismatch that must be addressed through tariff indexation, offshore reserve accounts, or a partial local-currency tranche rather than assumed away.
