English Definition
A debt security issued by the United Kingdom government, so named because the original certificates featured gilded edges. Gilts are considered among the safest fixed-income investments due to the sovereign credit backing and serve as the benchmark for sterling-denominated interest rates. They are issued in various maturities including short-dated, medium-dated, and long-dated, as well as index-linked gilts whose principal and interest payments are adjusted for inflation as measured by the Retail Price Index.
