English Definition
A description applied to securities of the highest credit quality, historically the bonds of the United Kingdom government and, by extension, any instrument whose repayment is regarded as effectively certain. The label matters less as a formal rating than as a pricing reference: yields on such paper set the risk-free anchor from which spreads on project and corporate debt are built. In a financing, movements in the gilt-edged curve reprice the base rate beneath a facility, so a sponsor's all-in cost can shift materially even where the credit margin negotiated for the project is unchanged.
