English Definition
A credit transfer payment system widely used in continental Europe whereby the payer instructs their bank to transfer funds directly from their account to the payee's account, as opposed to the cheque-based debit transfer system prevalent in Anglo-Saxon banking. Giro systems operate through centralised clearing mechanisms and are characterised by their efficiency, low cost, and suitability for recurring payments such as salaries, pensions, and utility bills. The concept originated with postal giro systems in the early twentieth century.
