The difference between an economy's actual gross national product and its potential GNP, representing the output lost due to underutilisation of productive resources including labour, capital, and technology. A positive GNP gap indicates that the economy is operating below its full capacity, typically associated with recession and unemployment, while a negative gap suggests overheating and inflationary pressures. Policymakers use the GNP gap as a key indicator for calibrating fiscal and monetary policy interventions aimed at stabilising the business cycle.
