English Definition
A substantial lump-sum payment or severance package given to a senior executive upon dismissal, forced resignation, or early retirement, often as part of a negotiated separation agreement. Golden handshakes compensate the executive for loss of office and may include cash, pension enhancements, health benefits continuation, and outplacement services. The practice has become a contentious corporate governance issue, with shareholder activist groups and regulators pushing for greater transparency, reasonableness caps, and clawback provisions in executive termination arrangements.
