The segment of economic activity that is legal in nature but operates outside official statistical measurement and regulatory oversight, often to avoid taxation or social security contributions. The grey economy includes unreported income from legitimate businesses, casual labour, and barter transactions. Its size is typically estimated through indirect methods such as currency demand analysis or discrepancies between national expenditure and income accounts, and it poses challenges for fiscal policy, tax collection, and macroeconomic planning.
