The total interest earned on a deposit, bond, or other interest-bearing instrument before the deduction of withholding tax, management fees, or other charges. Gross interest represents the nominal return generated by the investment and is the amount typically quoted by issuers and financial institutions. Investors must subtract applicable taxes and fees from gross interest to determine the net interest actually received, which is the relevant figure for after-tax return calculations.
