English Definition
A deposit or earnest money paid by a buyer to demonstrate good faith and commitment to a transaction. In real estate and project finance, hand money secures the buyer's position and is typically applied toward the purchase price at closing. If the buyer defaults, the seller may retain the deposit as liquidated damages.
