A pooled investment vehicle that employs diverse and often sophisticated strategies, including leverage, short selling, derivatives, and arbitrage, to generate absolute returns for its investors. Hedge funds are typically structured as limited partnerships and are available only to accredited or institutional investors. They are subject to lighter regulatory oversight than mutual funds, which allows greater flexibility but also carries higher risk.
