English Definition
The displacement of one commodity by another that is functionally similar when price, supply conditions, or technology change; fuel switching between natural gas and coal in energy markets is its best-known instance. In project financing this possibility of substitution creates both risk and opportunity: a revenue or cost structure tied to a single commodity can erode as a substitutable alternative gains a price advantage, so long-term offtake and supply contracts often seek to internalize this flexibility through price indexation and substitution clauses. A structure of low substitution elasticity — technically locked in — firms up the revenue base while raising exposure to a commodity-price shock.
