English Definition
An income-statement line aggregating the income a bank or financial institution earns from interest-bearing assets such as loans, securities, and deposit placements, showing the core return of the activity separately from fee and commission income. Read together with interest expense, this line reveals the bank's net interest margin and therefore its underlying profitability. It bears an indirect but meaningful relationship to project financing: how much room a bank allots to long-tenor, thin-margin project loans depends on the gap between the return expected across this line and its cost of capital, and in periods of compressed margins the appetite for project lending narrows because of that arithmetic.
