English Definition
An irrevocable payment instruction is a definitive payment directive that the obligor gives a paying agent and cannot afterward withdraw unilaterally, binding the transfer from a specified account to a specified creditor. In project finance this instrument is the core of the account-control mechanism that channels the revenue stream directly to debt service; through an irrevocable payment instruction given to the off-taker, project revenues flow straight into an escrow or collection account without passing through the sponsor's general treasury, letting the lender structurally insulate cash flow from the debtor's insolvency risk.
