English Definition
An item of value is any asset or element possessing economic worth whose ownership can be transferred or which can be pledged as security—cash, securities, commodities, intellectual property, or physical equipment may all fall within its scope. The concept emphasizes the economic weight of a thing, particularly in the context of collateral and exchange. In project finance the classification of items of value to be brought into the security pool determines the enforceability of collateral; pledging physical assets is relatively straightforward, whereas security over intangible items of value such as permits, licences, and contractual rights transfers very differently depending on whether the jurisdiction treats those rights as assignable.
