English Definition
The ability of a claimant to assert in a single action several claims it holds against the same defendant, even where those claims are independent of one another; unlike joinder of actions, it gathers separate claims rather than separate suits into one proceeding. Its aim is to resolve all disputes between the parties at once and forestall a stream of piecemeal litigation. It matters in insurance and indemnity disputes: advancing both contractual and tortious claims against a single loss in one file broadens the claimant's evidentiary strategy while also letting the defendant concentrate its defense in a single forum.
