English Definition
The undertaking of a legal or economic initiative jointly by several parties on the basis of a common right or interest; in the legal sense the presence of multiple claimants or defendants in one file, in the economic sense actors converging on a shared objective. Its effect is to concentrate dispersed individual power, raising the weight of a negotiation or dispute. In restructurings, joint creditor action is decisive: dispersed creditors overcoming the collective-action problem to form a single front generates the structural leverage that blocks individual holdout flight and brings the debtor to the table, though the cost of coordination sets the limit of that leverage.
