English Definition
A legal condition in which several debtors are each liable, both together and individually, for the full amount of the same obligation, so the creditor may demand the whole from whichever debtor it chooses. The debtor who pays retains a right of contribution to recover the others' shares, but that internal balance does not bind the creditor. In consortium structures the weight of this principle is that risk is priced against the strongest link rather than the weakest: because the counterparty can expect full performance from a single partner regardless of the internal split, the well-capitalized partner carries a hidden cross-guarantee burden.
