English Definition
The several debtor parties whose signatures appear on the same note or payment undertaking, each liable alone for the full face amount, so the creditor may demand the whole from any one maker. This detaches the collectability of the instrument from the paying capacity of a single signatory. In project financing it is decisive in co-signed notes and cross-guaranteed intragroup funding: adding other group companies as joint and several makers gives the creditor access to the entire group balance sheet, a depth of security reaching well beyond the limited assets of a single SPV.
