English Definition
The holding of an asset, document, or valuable under the shared control of two or more parties rather than one, requiring the parties to act together for access or disposal; in a financial context it is an internal-control mechanism that forecloses unilateral action. Distinct from the custody sense in family law, the focus here is asset security and the distribution of authority. In project financing the principle is decisive in escrow and collateral-holding arrangements: keeping security instruments or title deeds under dual signature prevents any one party from reaching the asset unilaterally and preserves the independence of the escrow arrangement and the integrity of the collateral.
