English Definition
The satisfaction of an obligation with goods, services or additional securities rather than cash; in borrowing its typical form is the payment-in-kind (PIK) instrument, where interest is capitalised onto principal instead of being paid in cash. The structure defers the debt-service burden through the construction phase, when a project generates no cash, and its logic is kin to that of a zero-coupon bond, since the return is carried to maturity. In return, because in-kind interest enlarges the debt balance before any payment is actually made, leverage quietly rises and senior lenders often cap the accretion by covenant.
