English Definition
The national currency Latvia used until the start of 2014, when it adopted the euro; beforehand it had been pegged within a narrow band to the euro in preparation for accession. During the 2008-2009 financial crisis Latvia chose to hold the peg rather than devalue the lats, adjusting instead through internal devaluation, a choice that preserved the euro anchor at the cost of a severe contraction. That episode carries a real lesson for projects earning local currency while owing euro debt, because deciding to hold a fixed-rate regime does not remove currency risk but merely converts it into the risk of a real economic contraction.
