English Definition
The timing gap arising while a payment is in transit — after it is mailed but before the recipient receives and banks it — during which the funds still appear in the payer's account; it is one component of float in cash management. Throughout this interval the money is effectively unavailable to either party, yet the interest benefit remains with the payer, which is precisely why corporate treasury compresses float by siting collection points geographically closer to payers. The spread of electronic payment has largely dissolved this item, making it now more of a historical reference.
