English Definition
To draw a bill of exchange on a person or institution (the drawee), containing an instruction to pay a stated amount; the drawer, by a written and transferable order, directs the drawee to pay the payee. This instrument sits at the core of international trade finance: under a letter of credit, the drawee's acceptance of the draft (often a bank's) creates an abstract payment undertaking, independent of the underlying contract, that allows the receivable to be discounted into cash. Drawing the draft at a term (usance) gives the seller financing and the buyer deferral of payment.
