English Definition
The amount corresponding to the last, incremental unit added to or removed from an existing level of a quantity; it measures the economics of the change rather than of the total. In decision analysis it is usually the marginal amount, not the average, that governs, since a rational choice weighs the return of the last incremental unit against its cost. In project finance the typical application is comparing the marginal cash flow an added debt tranche or increment of capacity brings against the marginal debt service it creates; even where the average return looks attractive, the structure is not enlarged if the marginal tranche impairs the DSCR.
