English Definition
The insurer or insurance specialist who assesses and accepts marine risks, fixes the scope of cover and the premium and thereby assumes the risk; the underwriting decision rests on variables such as the vessel's age and class, the peril of the route, the nature of the cargo and the carrier's record. In project finance the marine underwriter's risk appetite directly determines the shipping cost and insurability of heavy, high-value project equipment; an underwriting decision that excludes certain routes or seasonal conditions can force a rework of the delivery schedule and hence the construction timeline.
