English Definition
The process of bringing a project's environmental and social performance into simultaneous conformity with both host-country law and the standards of the institution providing the financing; where the two diverge, as a rule the stricter applies. International lenders often position their own performance requirements above local law. In practice this matching rests on a gap analysis setting out the difference between the project's current state and the lender's standard, and on an environmental-and-social action plan attached to the loan agreement committing to close it; breach of the commitments in that plan is often tied directly to an event-of-default provision.
