English Definition
A form of organisation in which employees report simultaneously to a functional manager and to a project or product manager, a dual-reporting line; the aim is to combine depth of expertise with project-oriented flexibility in a single structure. The price of this design is that authority and accountability are split in two. Matrix structures are common in managing complex projects, but the real tension surfaces in the contest over resources; because the project manager is answerable for the delivery date and the functional manager for efficient use of the resource, the conflict is not a design flaw but a feature embedded in the structure that must be managed continuously.
