English Definition
An interest-bearing deposit account that allows the holder to write drafts against the balance, combining the features of a savings account and a checking account. NOW accounts were developed to circumvent regulatory prohibitions on paying interest on demand deposits. They typically require a minimum balance and are offered by banks and thrift institutions to retail customers seeking both liquidity and a return on deposits.
