English Definition
The value found by discounting a project's future net cash flows to the present at an appropriate rate and subtracting the initial outlay; it denotes the same concept as net present value. In long-lived infrastructure projects the most critical and most contested component of this measure is the choice of discount rate, because in an asset spanning decades a small difference in the rate disproportionately alters the present value of cash flows in distant years, so the sponsor and the lender using different discount rates can arrive at markedly different values for the same project.
