English Definition
The countries that emerged from the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, including Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and the Central Asian and Caucasian republics. International financial institutions such as the EBRD and World Bank established dedicated programmes to support the economic transition of these states from centrally planned to market-based economies. The NIS classification remains relevant in development finance for targeting technical assistance and reform initiatives.
