English Definition
The national currency of New Zealand, a freely floating unit long known as a target of carry trades owing to a relatively high interest-rate environment. In project finance conducted in this region the currency's volatility produces practical consequences, because capital flows driven by the interest-rate differential can move the exchange rate independently of the project's underlying real economy; for an asset whose revenues arise in local currency, the cost of hedging therefore reflects not only the interest-rate spread but also the baseline volatility created by these speculative flows.
