English Definition
A designation applied to a cheque, draft, or electronic payment that cannot be honoured because the account on which it is drawn lacks adequate funds to cover the amount. An NSF determination results in the return of the payment instrument to the presenting party and may trigger penalties for the account holder, including returned item fees and damage to creditworthiness. Banks may offer overdraft protection programmes that automatically advance funds to cover NSF situations, converting what would be a returned payment into a short-term loan.
