English Definition
A multilateral fund established at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development to finance safety improvements at nuclear power plants in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. The Nuclear Safety Account receives contributions from donor governments and channels grants to support the upgrade of reactor safety systems, enhancement of operational procedures, and implementation of regulatory improvements. The account addresses the international community's concern regarding the continued operation of Soviet-designed reactors that did not meet Western safety standards.
