A coded routing number assigned to a bank within a national payment system that identifies the institution and its branch for the purpose of processing cheques, electronic funds transfers, and interbank settlements. In the United States, the numerical transit is the nine-digit ABA routing number, while other jurisdictions use analogous systems such as SWIFT/BIC codes or national sort codes. The numerical transit system enables the automated sorting, routing, and clearing of millions of payment transactions daily with minimal manual intervention.
