Indirect costs that cannot be attributed to a specific product, job or project, such as rent, administrative staff, insurance and general management, which sustain the enterprise's continuity. In project costing, the key by which overheads are allocated across projects is no trivial accounting choice, since over- or under-recovering this burden in contractor bids can mask the true margin, leaving a weak cost structure beneath a competitive-looking offer. When assessing an EPC contractor's resilience, lenders typically probe how the fixed overhead base pressures the business once backlog contracts.
