English Definition
The party to whom an obligation must be performed, the beneficiary of the debt or duty. In project finance the concept appears most concretely in guarantees and surety bonds, where in a performance bond the employer, as obligee, holds the right to call on the guarantor should the contractor (the obligor) fail to perform. How clearly the obligee's rights are defined in the contract determines whether the guarantee can be called on first demand or only on proof of breach, and that distinction is what sets the instrument's true value.
