English Definition
The party bound to perform a debt or duty, the one carrying responsibility toward the creditor (the obligee). In project finance the concept of the obligor sits at the center of credit analysis, since who the primary obligor is on a bond or loan determines which cash flow its repayment capacity rests on and where the creditor's recourse stops. In structured transactions the obligor is often a special-purpose vehicle consisting of little more than its assets and revenue, which separates the lender's true risk from the sponsor's balance sheet, so how the obligor's legal boundaries are drawn is the real matter setting the scope of recourse.
