English Definition
A type of bill of lading confirming that goods have actually been loaded on the vessel and that the carrier has taken them in that condition, proving loading on board unlike a mere received-for-shipment bill. In project finance and letter-of-credit international trade the document is critical; banks frequently require a clean bill bearing an on-board notation before paying, since it shows shipment risk has actually passed to the carrier. Because the document's date also fixes the timing of the transfer of risk and cost under Incoterms, strict compliance with the letter-of-credit terms is a condition of the payment flow.
