English Definition
The written methods defining step by step how a business is to carry out particular operational tasks; they translate the abstract principles of policy into actionable field actions and provide consistency, safety, and auditability. The maturity of standard operating procedures indicates an organization's capacity to function independently of individuals. In project finance, the operating and maintenance procedures being documented and consistent with the manufacturer's warranty terms carries double importance: operation outside procedure can void the equipment warranty, and the loss of warranty distorts the maintenance cost profile the lender assumed, feeding directly into the debt service model; SOP compliance is therefore often embedded as a contractual undertaking in the finance documents.
