English Definition
The total principal obligation a borrower still owes at a given date. Because it sits at the centre of leverage ratios and debt-service capacity, the maturity profile and currency composition of outstanding debt are often more telling than its bare amount. In project finance, outstanding debt attached to an asset that generates no cash produces a debt overhang: the existing burden is heavy enough that part of any new investor's return would in effect accrue to prior creditors, which deters fresh capital and frequently makes a restructuring unavoidable rather than merely advisable. Recognising the overhang early shapes whether rescue equity is priced at all.
