English Definition
The face value written on a security's instrument, taken as the basis for redemption or repayment; a security trading at par has a market price equal to that nominal value. A price above par is a premium and one below par is a discount, and the gap directly reflects the relationship between the coupon rate and the yield the market demands. Where a project bond clears below par, the pricing signals that the return lenders require exceeds what the coupon delivers, which raises the effective cost of funds.
