English Definition
The payment of part rather than all of a debt that has fallen due; if the creditor accepts it, the claim over the balance survives, but whether the payment is applied to principal, interest, or costs follows an order fixed in advance under most legal systems. That order of application looks trivial yet matters, since crediting interest first erodes the principal more slowly and raises the total cost. In project financing a partial repayment of a tranche determines which tier of the cash waterfall is funded, and lenders fix that order separately for the pre-default and post-default states.
