English Definition
The payment of the price of goods or services before delivery or performance, usually in a lump sum at the outset, a structure in which the buyer finances the supplier's future production early. Known as prepayment in commodity and energy trade, it offers the seller a source of capital alternative to project financing. In project finance, a prepaid offtake, where the buyer's payment is set off against future deliveries, effectively functions as a secured loan; the buyer gains a price advantage and security of supply while assuming the supplier's non-delivery risk, which it typically balances with a performance guarantee.
