English Definition
A detailed record showing every employee's gross pay, deductions, and net payment for a period, both individually and in aggregate, the common basis for the accounting entry, statutory filings, and payment instructions. For internal control it is the first document against which the consistency between the actual headcount and the wages paid is tested. In project finance and development-bank audits, the payroll register is the primary source for detecting abuses such as ghost employees and wage inflation; auditors often confirm the site headcount by cross-checking this record against actual attendance records and social-security filings.
