English Definition
Inflationary pressure temporarily suppressed through price controls, subsidies, a currency peg or administrative force, but which accumulates underneath and is released in an abrupt jump once the controls are relaxed. Throughout the period of suppression the official inflation figures understate the true price pressure. In project financing this is a deep source of risk, especially in projects resting on regulated tariffs; a government suppressing utility tariffs artificially for political reasons stores pent-up inflation in the tariff, and although the accumulation must one day be released through a tariff adjustment, its timing is subject to politics, creating a hidden exposure that erodes the project's real revenue unpredictably.
