English Definition
The irrevocable placement of cash into a trust dedicated solely to servicing a defined debt, economically matching the debtor's asset and liability so the obligation can be removed from the books. This structure is the essence of in-substance defeasance: once a sufficient amount of low-risk assets is irrevocably set aside, the corresponding debt may be derecognized. Lenders accept the reality of this mechanism only where the dedicated fund is calculated to cover debt service in full through to maturity.
