English Definition
The formal document setting out the terms, scope of cover, exclusions and the parties' obligations under an insurance contract; it constitutes the substance of the legal relationship between insurer and insured. The wording of cover and exclusions in the document is the very text that determines whether a claim will be paid. In project financing, examination of the policy document is the core of insurance due diligence; lenders typically require to be added to the policy as additional insured and loss payee, and demand that the insurer give them prior notice before unilaterally cancelling the policy under a non-cancellation clause.
